Want the thumbnail of a YouTube video as a sharp, full-size image? You can download it in seconds without any software: paste the video link into the ClipSaves YouTube Thumbnail Downloader, pick a size, and save the JPG. The largest version YouTube keeps is 1280 × 720 pixels (HD). This guide shows the quickest way on any device, explains every thumbnail size, and covers what to do when the HD version is missing.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail in HD (step by step)

  1. Copy the video link. On a computer, copy the address from your browser's address bar. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
  2. Open the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader on ClipSaves.
  3. Paste the link into the box. Regular links (youtube.com/watch?v=…), short links (youtu.be/…), Shorts links (youtube.com/shorts/…) and embed links all work. You can also paste just the 11-character video ID.
  4. Choose a size. The previews show every version YouTube has for that video. Max Resolution (1280 × 720) is the HD one.
  5. Click Download. The image is saved as a JPG named after the video ID, so you can find it again later.

That's it: no sign-up, no watermark and no app to install.

Every YouTube thumbnail size, explained

YouTube stores several copies of each thumbnail at fixed sizes. ClipSaves shows the four that are useful:

Name in ClipSavesYouTube file nameSizeBest for
Max Resolutionmaxresdefault.jpg1280 × 720Presentations, blog headers, design work
Standardsddefault.jpg640 × 480Documents and slides when HD isn't available
High Qualityhqdefault.jpg480 × 360Web pages, quick references
Medium Qualitymqdefault.jpg320 × 180Small previews and lists

There's also a tiny 120 × 90 version, which is too small to be useful, so we leave it out.

Tip: Max Resolution is a true 16:9 image. The Standard and High Quality versions are 4:3, so YouTube adds black bars above and below the picture. Crop them off if you need a clean 16:9 image.

Why is there no HD (1280 × 720) thumbnail?

Sometimes the Max Resolution preview shows a plain grey image, or the download is a small placeholder. That simply means YouTube never created an HD copy for that video. It usually happens when:

  • the video was uploaded below 720p, and the creator didn't upload a custom thumbnail;
  • the video is very old, from before YouTube made HD thumbnails standard;
  • the video was published only moments ago, before YouTube finished processing it.

What to do: download Standard (640 × 480) instead. It's the next-largest version and it's always available. If the video was just uploaded, wait a few minutes and try again.

Downloading thumbnails on iPhone, Android and computer

iPhone and iPad

  1. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
  2. Open Safari and go to the Thumbnail Downloader.
  3. Paste the link, then tap Download under the size you want.
  4. Safari saves it to the Downloads folder in the Files app. To put it in Photos, open the image in Files, tap Share, then Save Image.

Android

  1. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
  2. Open Chrome and go to the downloader, paste the link and tap Download.
  3. The image appears in your Downloads folder and in Google Photos under Downloads.

Windows, Mac and Chromebook

Copy the link from the address bar, paste it into the downloader and click Download. The JPG lands in your usual Downloads folder. You can also right-click any preview and choose Save image as…

Thumbnails for YouTube Shorts

Shorts have thumbnails too, and the steps are the same: copy the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/…) and paste it in. Shorts are usually filmed vertically, so the saved thumbnail may show the vertical frame inside a 16:9 or 4:3 image with blank space at the sides. Crop it if you need a vertical image.

To save the Short itself rather than its cover image, use the YouTube Shorts Downloader.

Every YouTube thumbnail lives at a predictable web address built from the video ID, the 11 characters after v= in a normal link:

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg

Swap maxresdefault for sddefault, hqdefault or mqdefault to get the other sizes from the table above. This is handy if you build web pages or spreadsheets and want to show a video's thumbnail without hosting the image yourself.

Two things to know:

  • If the HD file doesn't exist, the address returns an error or the grey placeholder described above, so always have a smaller size as a fallback.
  • When a creator changes their thumbnail, the image at the same address is replaced, usually within minutes. If you need a copy of today's version, download it rather than linking to it.

For everyone else, the Thumbnail Downloader does this for you: it reads the video ID from any link, shows every available size side by side, and saves the file with a clear name.

What people use downloaded thumbnails for

  • Studying what works. Creators collect thumbnails from successful videos in their niche to compare colours, text and faces before designing their own.
  • Your own videos. Recover the thumbnail of a video you uploaded when you no longer have the original file.
  • Presentations and lessons. Show which video you're referring to on a slide or worksheet.
  • Linking to a video in an article, with a visible credit to the channel.

Can I use someone else's thumbnail?

A thumbnail is a picture made by the channel that uploaded the video, and it is protected by copyright just like the video. Downloading one to look at, study or keep for your own reference is generally fine. Re-using it publicly — on your own channel, in an advert, or as if it were yours — needs the creator's permission, unless it's your own video. When you show someone else's thumbnail in an article or class, credit the channel and link to the original video.

Our copyright page explains how we handle creators' rights and takedown requests.

Troubleshooting

  • "Invalid link" or nothing happens. Make sure you copied the full link. Links from YouTube Music, playlists without a video, or channel pages don't point to a single video. Open the video itself and copy its link.
  • The image is blurry. You downloaded one of the smaller sizes. Pick Max Resolution, or Standard if HD isn't available.
  • Black bars on the image. That's the 4:3 format of the Standard and High Quality sizes. Crop the image, or use Max Resolution.
  • Private or deleted video. If the video is private or removed, YouTube no longer serves its thumbnail and there's nothing to download.
