A "GIF" on X is not a .gif file. When you upload one, X converts it to a short, silent, looping MP4 — that is what the platform stores and serves, which is why the animation is so much smaller and smoother than a real GIF would be.
So what downloads here is that MP4. It plays the same animation, loops in most players, and is a fraction of the size of an equivalent .gif.

How to Download a GIF from X
Step 1 — Open the post containing the GIF in the X app or on x.com.
Step 2 — Tap the share icon and choose Copy link. On desktop, copy the address bar.
Step 3 — Paste the link above and press Fetch.
Step 4 — Check the preview, then press Download.
Both x.com and the older twitter.com addresses resolve, as do short t.co links from the share menu.
If You Need an Actual .gif File
Because X stores the animation as video, no downloader can hand you the original .gif — the platform discarded it at upload.
If you specifically need a .gif, download the MP4 here and convert it with any video-to-GIF tool. Be aware that the converted file will usually be several times larger than the MP4 and may show colour banding, because the GIF format is limited to 256 colours.
For most uses — reposting, messaging apps, editing — the MP4 is the better file.
What Will Not Download
Posts from protected accounts, which X serves only to approved followers.
Posts that have been deleted, or accounts that have been suspended.
Links that point at a profile or a search rather than a specific post. The address needs a status ID in it — the long number after /status/.
If a fetch fails, copy the link again from the share menu: addresses copied from a browser bar sometimes carry extra tracking parameters.
